In Cincinnati, journalist Benjamin Harris links the murders of two Montana girls to an arson in which a teacher has vanished. A man named Dar Stewart has been arrested at the scene of a house fire and is the primary suspect in its arson. Ben talks his boss into letting him go to the small Montana town of Fords Mill to pursue the story. In researching the murders, Ben is unnerved by the details of the bodies. There is no sign of trauma, and the autopsies are returned, cause of death unknown. The girls were killed exactly two years apart and both have the same bizarre symbols scrawled across their backs.
Shortly after arriving in Fords Mill, Ben realizes the residents aren’t accepting of him at all. Fortunately, he meets a waitress named Kara Adler who is willing to help him. Kara immediately gets pulled into the mystery far deeper than she ever could have imagined.
Ben Harris knows this could be his big break, the story that takes him from tabloid reporter, to a serious journalist. He just isn’t prepared for what he is about to uncover.
